Just for your information, the stock VML clamp can be encouraged to work with an Avenger C-stand as illustrated here:

The clamp is not particularly happy about this arrangement but it does work. The Avenger riser column measures 35mm in diameter which exceeds Paul's stated clamp max of 1-1/4" (or 31.75mm).
