TS- Can you just ship them out already formatted until you find a solution? I'm a mac user and i just order mine today.

Formatting does not appear to be the source of the issue, therefore that would likely not help.

Is the SD card just for storing settings or firmware updates?

Both.

Firmware updates actually seem to be OK. Yes, a PC or Mac would be required, as well as a means of writing to a microSD card. The only things about Macs is formatting to FAT16. It is only possible if you know comand lines.

We have a possible resolution that is very promising being evaluated now. If it passes evaluation, I would expect it available early next week. This is subject to change as necessary.

New firmware has been posted to address this issue. You may use the existing cards to perform this update.
