Didn't earlier versions of CC have slight problem with range? If I recall they upgraded it with an external antenna to make it perform as good as CST.

You could just have the CC in your pocket and use CST on camera. Less weight on the hotshoe.

Range was improved with v.29 firmware on all Commanders and maintained through the rest of the firmware. Range was up to 150', as advertised with the internal antenna. An external antenna was added in December for even greater range.

Yep, I did that. I swapped the receivers out to see if one of them was the issue but the missed flash was more or less random between them, not just one.

Try different frequencies. If that does not help, the CC may need to come in.

I sent my Einsteins in for the update and included the CC and receivers. Maybe you can find something.

A friend of mine who also has the early version of the CC has the exact same issues despite new firmware and his solution is to use the CST on camera instead of the CC.

While that certainly works, the unit should be working as advertised. If any of our units are not working as such, we encourage the user to contact customer service so we can get that worked out.

Do you have a picture of your setup from camera to strobe distance? I would like to try and replicate the setting to see if it is indeed a fault. I've done a range test with my einstein and was able to consistenly trigger and control the einstein from a block away.

this was done with the cybercommander which does not have an antenna. all firmware files up to date. i would like to redo this test since the lighting conditions were terrible and I was limited to how far I could walk to test the absolute furthest triggering distance with the CC + einstein.

When I had that problem with an early CC and Einstein, I could eliminate the problem by going to the ALL group on the CC and firing a test shot from the CC.

I had a similar problem when I had a wireless N router right next to me, and switching channels cleared it up.

Question was aimed towards the OP about how his lights are setup.

thanks everyone for your suggestions and patience with me! :)

I sent them in with my Einsteins to be checked. I will get them back soon and then do some more tests.

The studio I worked in was more on the small side, and distance from camera to flash unit was 20 feet without any objects in between. It's as plain of a studio setup as it gets.
Maybe there were two WiFi networks in the area.

More tests were done at my apartment, where there is a huge number of WiFi networks. I think the orientation of the CC makes a big difference in range/reliability.

I will try more when I get them back. I might get a CST and use the CC hand held. I keep hearing/reading about this to be the most reliable way to go.
