If you tighten the cam lock counterclockwise as intended, the weight of the unit causes more tightening, not less.

The problem was the amount of force required to get that knob to be vertical was beyond what anyone wanted to use. So, we have always had the knob around "8 pm" and that was why it was so easy to release. Now that I have this sucker at 12, it isn't going anywhere. Of course, it was a bear to get to that point and releasing it is hard to do, but I guess that is the goal.

Can the moon unit be designed to make it any harder to get this thing attached? I don't think so. After an hour of playing with it and dealing with one side popping up just enough to not allow the unit to lock into rotation I thought I would post my frustration in hopes of a magical tip? This would be much easier if it was a giant thread.

When mine arrived, there were some nubs left over from the injection molding process on the trapezoid shaped attachment points, which prevented it from wedging into place. I had to take a dremel and cut them down to smooth slanted edges, which allowed it to finally attach. It's still a pain in the butt, but at least it'll go on now.

Edit: it looks like I'm not the only one who had this problem. Hmm. Aside from that initial quality issue, I haven't had any real issues with my ringflash. It would be nice to have a better way of attaching the camera to the sliding plate (perhaps a captive screw or an arca-swiss mount option).

yup, I had to do the same thing. I wish it was more of a "thread" type of connection.

Darn, I am having a major issue with this as well. I should have stopped here before purchasing. I really would like to see a video showing me what I am doing wrong. I can't get the speedring of the moon unit on. It has way too many tabs and I have no way of cutting it. Arrgh... It's 2012!!! No updates on this???

I hate returning stuff!!!

First, I recommend mounting only the speedring on the ringflash (i.e. without the moon unit) in order to get a feel of how it mounts. If you are finding there are too many tabs, then the speedring is probably being mounted backward. If you think of the ring as a hat, the brim would go on first, and be toward the back. The smaller diameter side would face the front.

When the MoonUnit is assembled, there should not be any plastic extending out of the back. The smaller diameter side should face inside the moon unit.

I have just started a new thread on this..... did not see this one.

It is hell!

I think that the modern conception of customer service is that if there is something wrong the customer should be pro-active in first using the tool of the internet to find a solution and then, once all avenues have been exhausted, seek technical support.

I have done that. I have downloaded the manual in .pdf form, because I have 2 x ABR800 I have tried two different rims.... one with a Moon Unit constructed and one without.... on two different ABR800 heads. There is no successful way to mount, or anyway to "get the feel".... I have found Rubik's Cubes easier and quicker to solve. Finally I have searched this forum for an answer and read multimple threads. So I have exhausted the avenues here and now I need a solution.

On my other thread, just to make absolute sure that it is not me being a boobie I am going to start posting pictures of my attempts, so you can see what I am doing, to mount the rim.... I cannot go on like this. I love everything about the Alienbees, except this and although this is its only fault it is such a major one.
