Finding a suitable cap for the protective cover was the hard part. What I wound up using was a white PVC sewer and drain cap that I found at the local hardware store. The PVC piece was about 2" long so, before doing anything else, I cut off the end I was planning to use. The inside diameter of the cap was a few millimeters too small to fit over the end of the cut down PCB cover so I had to remove some material (using a rotary rasp in the drill press). Once the opening allowed for a tight friction fit on the end of the cut down stock protective cover, the new end cap was sprayed with textured black paint (intended for use on plastic). Done.

Very nice cap mod. I'm really hoping the redesigned caps will be shorter so I don't have to invest in power tools. The height of the Einstein, without cap, is just short enough to fit sitting upright in compact backpacks or bags. This would allow me to pack 4 Einsteins in a relatively small bag. Combined with the VML it's a relatively portable kit.

Thank you. The Einstein with stock protective cap measures 9-7/8" long. With my shortened cap, it measures 8-1/2" long. A molded cap might be able to reduce overall length to 8-3/8" or perhaps even 8-1/4".

Graphically, this is the difference:

Yup, all of Dave's mods are super clean! I'd really like to get enough cojones (& skill) to do that recent PLM mount mod you showed off on another thread.

Big ups to BigIronCruiser - went ahead with your idea of modifying my newly swapped units' covers, and now they fit nice & tight!

Do you pack/transport your Einsteins with the CSXCV removed or left in place? It really adds to the size, but I am a bit worried about plugging and unplugging all the time.

I remove mine every time. It seems too easy to damage it in transport with it installed, sticking up as much as it does.
