I have some White Lightning Ultra 600 and 1200's (vintage 1991) which have a back slider that gives 5 stops of power output. I was wondering about modifying them with a new power level slider with greater resistance in the slider component, or just a "quarter power switch" that could kick in some extra resistance to get lower power settings.

I have been reading about modifications to Vivitar 285hv's along these lines to go from 4 stops to 7, and I wish I could get 7-9 stops of power levels in the WL/Ultras like the upcoming Einsteins. It would seem a relatively simple matter to add more resistance in one way or the other to the units. Is this possible as a DIY project, or by sending into PCB?

Vivitar HV's and WL ultras are two different animals. The modification in the HV's is tapping into the existing components, and basically adding a manual adjustment where the sensor is for its automatic adjustment. This technology is adjusting the flash duration to adjust the amount of light, while keeping voltage the same. The Ultras adjust voltage to adjust output, and while the X-series lights incorporate a 1/4 power switch, it is not in the design of the Ultras to do so. We do not offer any service to increase the adjustment range, nor do have any suggestions on how to do so.
