I have currently been lighting my white background with umbrellas but they tend to get light everywhere. So I'm thinking about the 7" reflector (one on each side rather than directly behind the model). The distance from the lights to the background is about 5-6 feet.

Reasonable idea?

Reasonable, yes. Criss cross the light for more even coverage and spread. You may also want to look at flagging the umbrellas or reflectors to keep light from falling directly on the subject.
