I have a Zeus ZRM1 RingMaster which I like very much. However, I'd love larger catchlights in my subjects eyes. Has anyone had any luck with putting a round, black gobo between a beauty dish (perhaps a black disc on the sock?) and the subject and shooting in front of it? Examples would be great if you have any. thanks, Timothy |

Are you trying to get a ring catchlight? The MU56 with the ring diffuser will be your best bet. The MU30 with the masks will be next best. I have put a disk over an umbrella and kinda got the ring catch light, but it will not be centered unless the light is on axis. Additionally, the larger moon units will allow the lights to be farther away, and still get the look, while the beauty dish will need to be fairly close. TS |

I have no idea what that is, but our MU30 and MU56 with the appropriate diffuser or mask will create catch lights as big or bigger (depending on placement) http://www.alienbees.com/moonunit.html http://www.alienbees.com/mu56.html |

this is a piggyback question on the ringflash catchlights. how does using the classic ring mask on the moon unit 30 affect output and coverage of the subject? anyone have any experience with this? wondering if there is a dead zone in the middle where there is fall of, or what is the effect basically any picture links would be great...even if it's a boring subject. |

If you can wait until the weekend, I'll try to do a series of test shots with the entire 30" MU mask package at a fixed distance for comparison. I use the 30" model hand held and close, so even though I'd use a tripod mount for a test series, they would be suitably close for the size of the modifier. The larger MU is much better as a studio set piece tool, but it is NOT suitable for hand held use. I have never really seen a series of a single subject with all the standard masks, so If I can conscript a model, or borrow a large stuffed bear between now and Sunday, I'll post a link to the result... The light in the image from the NSFW photo is a florescent light. You can buy them at Home Depot. I got mine in the kitchen lighting section. The final image was photoshoped to remove the connector and wires to the ballast so that it looked completely round. The first time I saw this was about 4 years ago.
