Post subject:  Does Flash Tube Wear Out

I have a set of old X2400 in the rafters of a gym. Difficult to get to, so I want to be prepared when I go to check them out (must go up a single man lift to get to them).

One in particular seems to be giving off about 1 to 1.5 stops less light than it use to. Can't compare an old meter reading to a new, but based on shooting with them last basketball season until now, certainly seems a lot darker and based on the meter, about that far off from the other 3.

No one else would have had access to them or changed any settings, but my questions begin with the flash tube. In some types of artificial light bulbs, as they get older the color temperature can change and they can emit less light. Is this true of flash tubes? Could it be that if I simply replace that flash tube that I will regain my 1 to 1.5 stops or am I barking up the wrong tree and it has to be something else.

If that was the case, I would probably replace all four tubes, but if it is not, then I don't want to buy four replacements. As well, since I have a ton of basketball games in the next two months, taking it down and having it checked out by PCB is not a good option. If I can troubleshoot and fix in the arena that would be helpful.

I would appreciate all thoughts!

Tim

Not really. If a tube emits less light than previously, it would be over a very short period of time. It is most likely an internal issue that would need to come in.
