Hello

I'm wondering if it's possible to order the PLMs without the speedring adapters.

But what I'm really wondering is if I order perhaps the 8mm shaft one, would I still be able to convert that said umbrella to the bees speedring? I'm not sure if all the PLMs come with that adjustment rod for attaching to a speedring or not.

you would have to talk with customer service if you can just order the umbrella.

the speedring attaches to the plm via a 1/4" thread to a rod holder which also doubles as the shaft for the 8mm umbrella rod. It is the screw at the top of the umbrella that secures the rod holder from going anywhere. It also has a hole so that the screw can place tension on the umbrella rod when it is in the rod holder.

hard to explain, but pictures/ video will give you an idea.

Yeah I figured as much.

I've got an extra alienbees sitting around with the speedring. I just wanna see if they could sell me the umbrella with that threaded mount rod and the screws which attach to the speedring xD

The speedring used for the PLM is unlike any other speedring. It is refered to as a "speedring cage", as there are rods which hold a ring which threads to the shaft. I dont think the PLM is available without the speedring cage, unless you purchase the 8mm version.

I got the 8mm PLM, it just connects right into the AB800 perfectly. Supposedly there is some spill, but I was told it wouldn't be noticeably. I wanted something quick and simple as it would be at home and would have to put up and take down quickly and easily.

I also got the front diffusion, which I suspect would eliminate any of that spill anyway.

Adding front diffusion doesn't eliminate spill...it increases it since light will spray more in different directions...it's a nice soft source if you get 86" though...
