I've only used my cyber commander with the included batteries for two shoots and I'm already getting a low battery reading. When it goes to sleep is it actually off? Or do you have to do something to actually turn it off?

It is off when the screen is off. You can turn the screen off by pressing and holding the left joystick in for >2s (your lights will fire if set to do so). Also, the unit can be triggered via the hotshoe or sync connections, even if the unit is otherwise off. It is designed to only draw power for the duration of the triggering process.
