Post subject:  Simulating Window Light With Umbrellas???

Hi there,

I would like to be able to simulate a large window light in my (windowless) studio. Is it possible to do this well with the PLM umbrellas and a sheet of some kind?

Most people suggest using a softbox for this, but I don't want to get a soft box right now until I upgrade my lights (from my old WL10K series).

Would I need a shoot through umbrella or a bounce?

thanks in advance for any suggestions.

A shoot through would scatter more than a bounce, possibly in areas you do not want light to scatter, so I would do a bounce. You can get diffusion fabrics for the PLMs and not have to worry about hanging a separate sheet. This would mimic the look of an ungridded softbox fairly closely. http://www.paulcbuff.com/wfdf.php
