Post subject:  Are grids worth it when investing in softboxes?

Hi All I was just wondering if anyone had some examples of some lighting techniques of shooting with grids and non grid softbox/octa techinques.

I would like to have every type of modifier but want to make sure I get the right ones where I wont have to invest in other pieces soon after the initial purchase.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Guys

A lot of this depends on your own "style" and your room. Try a few things and if you don't like them, sell them locally or return them (60 day return policy).
I personally love using grids all the time...others don't...

I would say they are good to have, even if you do not use them all of the time. They will limit how much spill you get on areas you don't want light on (like the back ground).

Like others have said, it depends on what you are trying to achieve. I use them often when I want the light from the softbox on my subject and not spilling into the background. I think having more options on modifying your lights gives you more control over the finished photograph.

Love them, def worth it for all of the above reasons (light control)

Grids can also prevent light from the modifier coming back into the lens.

If you are considering a modifier purchase, always buy with a grid.

I have 4 that are used almost exclusively WITH a grid. The 60" octo's and the 12" X 36" strip lights. The difference between a light source at 60 inches focused and not, is the complete shot period. With that ability to focus such a large piece of light makes for real flexibility in the creative process. If you need that artificial window? it's right there without the grid attached.

The strip lights and almost paperweights without a grid. You need that ability to just rim that light on the edges of faces, body parts and whole bodies from side to side or just one side in order to make them do what they are described as.... Rim Lights.

Just my opinion.
