How much effect does the rear panel location of the slave sensor on the AB 400/800 have on their ability to pick up another flash firing and trigger? I ask this because I note some intermittent failure to fire issues on a recent studio shoot, when 2 AB 800 were ~ the same distance away from the subject. Problem seemed to correct itself when I put the master AB noticeably behind the slave AB. I also have some Flashpoint II monolights where the sensor is located on top of the strobe housing and have never experienced this failure to fire scenario.

Of course it matters. The slave sensor is activated with the flash of a master. If the light is bounced around and weakened before it hits the sensor than it will be less reliable than being in direct path of the light..

PCB put the slave on top of the Einstein for this reason. But modifiers can still get in the way and weaken the light hitting the sensor. For near 100% reliability, you need a radio slave on each unit.
