Hi,

I just got a new Einstein unit. When it is close to or at full power I get a distinct popping noise when it flashes, it sounds like its going to pop, is this normal? It doesn't make the sound at lower outputs.

Thanks,

Mike

The units will "pop", the volume of which will vary on output, and to some degree, the modifier used. As long as it is a single "pop" sound vs. a "crack", electronic "snap" sound or multiple pops per trigger, you are fine.

The latter sound(s) can denote an arcing flash tube or other issue.

Two answers here.

1. The sound of a flashtube is mostly determined by it's flash duration. Fast duration flashes make a distinct and fairly loud and sharp "Pop". Slow durations make a quieter "Poof" noise. As you lower the power on Einstein you can hear the "Pop" turn into a "Snap" because of the shorter duration.

2. The flashtube pop is amplified (in cases, dramatically) by the shape of the reflector, which acts as an acoustic resonator.

I've test fired twin Zeus 2500WS packs into a single bi-tube head with reflector and flinch when I push the test button because the sound is pretty much like a 30 caliber pistol.
