Post subject:  Speedring insert to use PCB foldable softboxes on a Bowens

I have the PCB 47" foldable octabox, 24"x36" foldable softbox, and (2) 10"x36" foldable stripboxes for my Alienbees and Einstein. I love my setup and the modifiers. I would like to use the modifiers for my speedlights as well. I have the Cheetah Speed Pro Bracket Mk II for my speedlights. It uses the Bowens mount. Does anyone make a Bowens speedring insert that will fit the removable insert in the PCB softboxes?

I measure the PCB insert at 142mm / 5.5". I can't seem to find a Bowen's insert at this size (when I can even find the information about the diameter of the insert).

Can anyone help?

Thank you in advance.

The Photek Illuminata speedring inserts fit. However, I have not seen a Bowens insert in about a year.

One of these may also work, though I have not tested them specifically. http://www.dennymfg.com/ProductDetailsN ... bcb86d2c04

It is hard to find diameter specs on speedring inserts. These are from either deduction or first hand experience.

This sucks. I was excited I could use PCB softboxes on Bowen light. Now back to square one

Thus should work if insert is a little big? http://www.hollywoodwelding.com/metalwork/

From the photos, it looks like that's a little deeper than yours. Will yours be available again sometime, or is it permanently dropped? I think I'd prefer the shallower one.

(and I have to mention, this question recalls an instance when PCB explained in great depth why the shape of some 3rd-party speedring adapter made for inferior light. I can't remember what forum it was but he got into a very heated discussion that he didn't intend to lose. His passion is missed.)

The Bowens adapter is marginally deeper than our adapter overall (about 1/2") and the Bowens adapter protrudes past the larger flange a tad, making the flashtube to softbox distance within 1/4" or so of our adapter.

Yes, the position can make a difference, but that will be based on the design of the softbox and the design of the light used. I believe Paul's argument was a flat adapter or a very deep adapter (i.e. an adapter on an adapter) on a Buff light (with a flat faceplate) with our softbox would be less effective than the curved inner rings we use. Bowens lights with integrates reflector faceplates or adapters for speedlights would react differently, and a deeper speedring may not matter. Incidentally, I believe this was discussed on Fred Miranda.

We will continue sales of our adapters, though I cannot give a date of when they will be available at this time.

For what it is worth, our adapters are back online for sale.
