Post subject:  Boom arm for LS3900

Hi, I recently got the LS3900 with an Einstein and a PCB 22' Beauty Dish and a PCB medium 24x36 soft box. I have been looking for a boom arm and wanted to know if there is any specific one that is recommended. I know that the LS3900 maximum weight is 25 pounds. So far I have been looking at the Manfrotto Mini Boom Kit (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Manfrotto-Mini- ... 259a3e3931) and the larger Manfrotto 024B (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001BH ... DBN7BBSEPL).

Is the heavier one too heavy for my stand? Which one would you recommend? If you use a different boom arm with the LS3900, I'm all ears!

Thanks!
Jon

The second item is a good choice as it has a knuckle to attach to the stand (do not attach a boom to the top stud). It is very similar to our first boom arm, so there should be no trouble there. Also, it has a position able stud, which will preempt the need for a baby drop down pin to avoid the box/light spinning.

Can I ask if one should not attach a boom arm to a standard light stand on the top stud in general?

I have some older medium weight photoflex light stands and I was planning on putting a boom arm on top of them (on the 5/8th stud).

Is that a bad thing to do? Or does it just depend on the stud / stand?

At the very least, could I attach a PCB baby boom to the top stud of my light stand and then put an AB800 and a parasol / plm on it?

thanks in advance, and sorry for interrupting.

If the stud and center column is all one piece, or the manufacturer suggest you can, then mounting a boom arm is fine (always refer to the stand manufacturer for advice).

Our studs are pressed in and can support the weight of a light and softbox mounted to it. However, if you use a 3 foot boom arm, the torque applied is much greater.

A mini boom arm with an umbrella/PLM should not be a problem.

Thank You.

I will check with photoflex.
