I just updated my firmware and fired maybe 40-50 frames on full power, the unit went POP and smoke poured out from the air vents in the light. The flash blub and modeling lamp are fine the light itself is fried. I'm using them in Australian on 240v mains power. I'm in the middle of a big shoot and my other lights have been upgraded too so its only a matter of time until this problem shuts down this shoot. Not happy!!

a pop and smoke is not a result of the firmware, but rather a hardware failure. Customer service will be able to help you get this corrected on Monday.

I took your word for it and plugged in one of the others that had the firmware update and the same thing happened. I've got one more Einstein that has the old firmware on it and it works but stops firing if I take 10-20 shots with 2-3 seconds gap (Full power). The ready light stays red and I have to wait 5-10min to shoot again.

Does this have anything to do with the new firmware update? (What kind of photography were you doing at the time?) Thanks.

I will double check in the a.m. of any possible correlation, but it sounds more hardware than firmware.

I did confirm with engineering that this is a case of hardware failure, the exact cause will be determined once we recieve them. FW v22 is safe to update, and is shipping on all new lights.

I have the same problem upgrading.. I have a newly formated 1G Sandisk MicroSD card and copied the firmware files.. The Einstein (currently on v20 firmware) will not switch to the white screen after plugging in.

Powering it up manually, I can navigate to the bootload screen and it can see the 0173-R22.hex file.. However, trying to load this just resets the Einstein to the power up screen almost immediately..

Any solution?
- M

try redownloading the firmware onto your computer, then to the card and try again. Make sure this is the only thing on the card, and the card is formatted to FAT/FAT 16 and not FAT32.
