Maybe its just me... but I just had a moon unit and ring light delivered and the speed ring seems to have totally the wrong mounting "thread" (or notches or whatever you want to call them).

What's up with that?

Ther is only one mounting design, you did not get an incorrect one. However, it takes some practice to get comfortable mounting it. I would recommend mounting just the speedring before you attach the moon unit. Also, the most common issue we see is the speedring attempted to be mounted backwards. If you imagine the ring as a top hat; the brim goes toward the back of the light, with the crown toward the front.
