Unfortunately I do need the lamp on for my space, which is usually rather dark. Otherwise my subjects tend to have huge dilated pupils, which I find undesirable. Hopefully a lower wattage lamp would do the trick.
One possible work around for the dark camera room is to get a cheap clamp on work light with a 100 watt bulb from Walmart and place it so that it brightens up the room. Unless you are using a very slow shutter speed it shouldn't show show up in your images, you can verify that by taking a shot with the flash unit off and the clamp on light in position. I avoid pointing it directly at the subject, just because it makes them squint.
